Earth's past climate has changed dramatically over a variety of timescales and due to different forcing mechanisms. This meeting organised by SGPC showcased and examined how these dramatic natural variations in climate are being reconstructed from the geological record.
It presented climate model simulations for a number of radically different climate states in Earth history, when atmospheric CO2 concentrations were similar or even much higher than they are today. It described how combined geological and climate modelling studies are attempting to lift the veil on the complex nature of our planet's climate and environmental history, which tells us about the sensitivity of the climate system to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases.
This meeting was sponsored by The Grantham Institute for Climate Change, an Institute of Imperial College London. It was part of the Royal Meteorological Society National Meetings programme, open to all, from expert to enthusiast, for topical discussions on the latest advances in weather and climate.
