The Development of an Airborne Gas Chromatograph

PRELIMINARY RESULTS

Below is shown a typical chromatogram obtained (summer 1999) from the airborne GC system being developed showing a separation of n- and iso-butane. The separation is carried out in under 1.5 minutes, enabling the whole analysis to be carried out in under 4 minutes - after backflushing heavier components off the column. Faster analyses enable more frequent sampling - the frequency of sampling being an important factor to consider when travelling on an aircraft through the atmosphere.
