Project
Title: Comparative insights on research investigating dynamics of coupled
natural and human systems
Role: Fellow
Status: Complete
Duration: July 2008
Funding Body: ESRC & SSRC (US Social Science Research Council)
Amount: £4530
Project Summary:
This fellowship exchanged comparative insights on research approaches and outputs between four major projects investigating the dynamics of coupled natural and human systems, with a view to developing joint funding proposals and papers. The exchange explored the prospect of joint-research funding applications on the theme of “Future Drylands”, involving use of participatory integrated modeling, combining climate change and socio-economic scenarios, to explore interactive future effects and develop bundles of adaptation options that combine local and scientific knowledge. The fellowship funded Mark Reed, who led the development of two major ongoing projects funded by the Rural Economy and Land Use (RELU) programme and EU Framework 6 to visit a major project funded under NSF’s Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems programme. This fellowship represents part of a wider interest among the UK Research Councils (and particularly ESRC) and RELU programme in establishing strategic international links and cross-programme learning specifically related to this NSF programme. The fellowship consisted of an intensive 2-week visits to the NSF project during July 2008. The insights that emerged from these discussions led to the development of a collaborative research proposal under NERC's Ecosystem Services and Poverty Alleviation scheme and two manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed international journals, as well as the broader comparative learning between the NSF and RELU programmes.
