My Profile:

I obtained a BA Honours Degree from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1998, and the title of my dissertation was “Management of a Common Resource Area: Methods for Dealing with Pollution in the North Sea”.  I commenced part-time study towards a PhD in January 1999 and my supervisor was Dr Sally Macgill.  I completed my PhD in May 2005.

·         10/2016 – present – Rapporteur / Independent Assessor – EU H2020 Transport Calls

·         03/2014 - 03/2015 – Project Research Fellow, School of Marine Science and Engineering, Plymouth University, working on the PEGASEAS INTERREG IVa cross-Channel capitalization project between France and the UK promoting efficient governance of the Channel’s ecosystem. This included preparing reports for policy makers and stakeholders in the Channel region, stakeholder engagement via workshops and a public survey, presentations and leading/facilitating workshop sessions at Cross Channel Forums. For more information see: https://www.pegaseas.eu/

·         03/2014 - present – Consultant/Module author for “Measurement and Management Systems” for an online certificate in “Marine Pollution Prevention and Management” run by Lloyds Maritime Academy. Further information available at: www.lloydsmaritimeacademy.com/mppm

·         01/2011 - present – Visiting Researcher, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, working in the areas of governance, policy and the environment, with a specific interest in marine environmental policy and maritime (including economic and food) security. I have undertaken research in the areas of EU maritime transport, EU border security via its maritime coasts and ports, on the use of satellites for maritime security and safety, and for environmental monitoring. I am working on a number of research papers with colleagues in the UK, the Netherlands, Mexico, Sweden, Austria and Japan, for example. I have written a number of papers and edited a volume on Oil Pollution in the North Sea in the Springer Handbook of Environmental Chemistry and am now working on a volume on Oil Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea for that series.

·         03/2011 - 05/2012 – Academic Advisor (part time) to Europe-Economics, London working on a European Commission funded project for DG MOVE. This project reviewed the effectiveness of the EU Port Reception Facilities for Ship-Generated Waste and Cargo Residues Directive (2000/59/EC). I was involved in the preparation of reports to the Commission, attended meetings in Brussels and London, liaised with members of the project team, conducted interviews with representatives of EU sea ports, and helped to develop policy options put forward to the Commission.

·         07–12/2010 – Research Assistant on a project looking at career destinations of School of Earth and Environment graduates on Earth Sciences, Environment and Geography courses within the University of Leeds School of Earth and Environment

·         08/2006 - 06/2010 – Research Fellow and Teaching Assistant, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds. I worked on project examining corporate social responsibility and environmental justice, specifically focusing on the petroleum refining industry in the US, EU and other OECD countries. I also taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level and completed the University of Leeds Teaching Award at Level 2.

·         02-07/2006 – Research Assistant, Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence, University of Leeds, working for Professor Juliet Lodge on the EU 6th Framework Programme R4eGov – Making eGovernment Work.

·         09/2005 – 01/2006 – Visiting Lecturer, School of Environment, University of Leeds. This involved teaching on Applied Statistical Methods (level 2) module.

01/1998 – 04/2005 – Part time interdisciplinary PhD, School of Environment at the University of Leeds on “The Reduction of Ship-Generated Waste in the North Sea: A Contemporary Analysis”; looking at aspects of the North Sea as a common resource area with multiple users and uses. I examined the development and introduction of a new EU Directive as a means of reducing vessel source pollution in the region, drawing information from a broad range of areas including law, policy and environmental studies.

Teaching Experience:

I was involved with teaching in the School of Earth and Environment for nearly 11 years, both during my PhD and under subsequent short term contracts.  I have worked on a wide range of other modules during the 5 years of my formal Teaching Assistant role at the University, and also prior to that while as a Research Student.  Many of the modules I have worked on were team taught and I have undertaken a range of teaching, assessment and administrative activities for those modules.  I am experienced at teaching both undergraduate and Masters’ level students.  I hold the University of Leeds ULTA2 Award – Professional Standard 2 and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

I have led seminars and workshops, and presented lectures in a wide range of subjects within the School.  For example, I taught on a Masters (Level 5) Research Methods module, providing lectures and workshops to a large group of students on Quantitative Statistical Analysis.  I was responsible for producing all the lecture and workshop materials and for writing a new assessment for this module, using research data from the US refineries benchmarking project, for students to undertake quantitative analysis. I also acted as Module Manager for a Level 3 (10 credit) module in Environmental Politics, Policy and Economics: Critical Analysis.  For that module I organised the lecture content (team taught), developed lecture material, ran seminar sessions, set and marked the assessment.  I was also Module Manager for a Level 3 (20 credit) Environmental Enterprise Project.  The module was equivalent to a standard dissertation. I organised external mentor sessions, co-marked student presentations and final business plans (which are submitted instead of dissertations).  I also co-managed a Level 2 Tools & Techniques for Business (20 credit) module.
