My Curriculum Vitae

2006 - 2010 The University of Leeds

Ph.D entitled: Attenuation of Volcanic Seismic Signals.

For more details on my thesis, see my research page.

2005 - 2006 The University of Leeds

M.Res. Physics of the Earth and Atmosphere (Distinction)

Subjects Studied:
In September 2006 I finished studying for an M.Res qualification in Physics of the Earth & Atmosphere, where my primary focus was Geophysics. My main research project looked at combining low frequency seismic signals in a volcanic environment with magma flow models.

2001- 2004 The University of Durham

B.Sc. (Hons) Natural Sciences, Class: 1st

Department of Earth Sciences, UK Chevron Award Winner for Petroleum Geophysics (2004).

Subjects Studied:
The Natural Sciences degree allowed me to choose different combinations of modules and subjects to suit my own needs and interests. I studied mainly Geophysics throughout my second and third years and wrote a Geophysics based dissertation which used magnetic methods to look at Tertiary igneous intrusion in North Wales. As well as this I took several modules in both Mathematics and Physics at second year level or above, and also studied one module in Philosophy.

Skills developed:
Excellent written and oral communication; research, interpretation and presentation, and excellent mathematical and IT skills. Worked well on my own and as part of a team for group projects; set my own deadlines and managed my time effectively under pressure - particularly for dissertation.

1997 - 2001 Bosworth Community College, Leicester Lane, Desford, Leicester.

A levels: Mathematics (A), Physics (A), Geography (A), Art (B) and General Studies (A).
GCSEs: 9, all grade A or A*, including Maths & English Language.

●   Enjoy travel, as part of my studies and research I have been lucky enough to visit the following countries/places (amongst others): United States, Canada, Iceland, Spain, La Réunion (France), Austria, The Azores, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia, Trinidad and, of course, Montserrat!
●    Keen interest in many sports, particularly, cricket, rugby, tennis and running. Played regularly for Kirkby Mallory Cricket Club (Summers 2004/05). Completed the Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon in November 2011.
●    Photography: Contributing photographer to the joint MVO/UWI published 'Island of Fire' photographic book.
●    Many musical interests, particularly contemporary rock music. Have been playing the guitar for almost 20 years and performed in several bands. I have been a musician for Montserrat's Emerald Community Singers since January 2012 and a member of Montserrat's 'Volpanics; Steel Orchestra since October 2010.
●    Captain of Collingwood College (University of Durham) University Challenge team in 2004

Other Skills

●   Responsibilities:

●    Computing:

●   Fieldwork: Responsible, with support from MVO technical staff, for the efficient operation and maintenance of the MVO seismic network. Have also undertaken fieldwork as part of my undergraduate study and more recently postgraduate research in both the U.K. and abroad. I have experience in the use of a variety of geophysical techniques and equipment.

●   Reviewer: Have acted as a reviewer for several papers for the following journals: Geology, Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (JVGR) and Earth and Planetary Science Letters (EPSL) at the invitation of the editors.
