Correlation of Earth's Magnetic Field with Lower Mantle Thermal and Seismic Structure
Variations in the Earth's lower mantle appear to influence the geodynamo operating in the liquid core. Here, a geodynamo field that is almost locked to the boundary is presented, allowing a direct comparison with the present-day geomagnetic field.
Radial magnetic field at the fluid core surface is truncated to spherical harmonic degree 14. The lateral inhomogeneity in upper boundary heat flux, Ra_H/Ra_V, is the ratio of the peak-to-peak variation in heat flux to the average radial heat flux through the core surface.
