Stean cottage is right in the heart of the beautiful Upper Nidderdale countryside. No need to get in the car and drive anywhere. All the pictures below were taken within easy walking distance of the cottage.
You can stroll over the ford and up the track for a level walk with great views, descending to How Stean Gorge for a cup of tea before the short march back up the road (very little traffic, as there are only 5 houses at the end of it) to the cottage.
You can walk down the drive, through How Stean Farm, along a well-made track to Well House Farm, where a path descends to the river Nidd. This is an idyllic spot, where you can spend time by the river, crossing over if the water is low enough to continue the walk by a circular route to Middlesmoor or How Stean Gorge.
You can cross the fields and climb up the hill to Middlesmoor, where the Crown Inn is a most welcoming target. Take a torch if you venture up in the evening!
For walkers who like to cover more ground, there are ways up Little Whernside and over into Wharfedale, all within a days' walk.
The well-signposted Nidderdale Way passes right by the cottage, and the whole area is a haven for walkers, cyclists, bird-watchers, or anyone who just wants some peace.
